Gardens

When clients saw the cottage, rose, and shade gardens we created around our ‘Not So Big House’ in Brookline, they asked for help with their own landscapes. From soil test to planting plan to maintenance checklist, we help gardeners spruce up old gardens and create new ones, from urban kitchen plot to sweeping garden beds. We design to connect house and landscape, keeping in mind that in New England we spend more time looking out from inside – framing views is top of our list. We like to make a crisp line, straight or curved, and plant it with abundance. Our plant lists are ecological, choosing the right plant for the right place, and always with pollinators in mind, mingling natives like coneflowers and mountain mint with imports like Calamintha nepeta nepeta. We recommend a range of hedge plants instead of fencing, and always think about movement through the garden, not only for our feet but for any necessary equipment, and in the garden – we have some favorite ornamental grasses we like to integrate for the graceful dance they bring to the perennial bed.

Sukie contributes to the British garden quarterly HORTUS and lectures about some of the gardens she’s written about for them.
