Residence, Virginia Beach VA

The North End of this lively resort community is lined with small bungalows on quiet dead-end roads overhung with live oaks and loblolly pines. Respecting this neighborhood’s intimate scale, we restored part of the original tumbledown cottage as a separate dwelling unit and stepped the second floor of the new house with its octagonal sleeping porch well back from the new front garden. When the seasoned plaster artist read David’s drawing detailing the curve of the new ceiling, he shook his head and said, ‘this architect must be on drugs’; he rose to the occasion - a curvilinear surface rises overhead like a wave from the first-floor living room, cresting at the top of the second-floor family room. The house and garden are featured in Cottages on the Coast, Rizzoli Books.
